Why maintain your effluent filter ?
The effluent filter has been mandatory since 2008. Its purpose is to block suspended materials in order to protect the leach field. If it becomes clogged, ventilation no longer works properly, which can damage the system or cause backflow.

Who is responsible for maintaining the system’s effluent filter ?
In Quebec, the responsibility for maintaining and cleaning the septic tank’s effluent filter falls on the homeowner. They must ensure that the system is serviced regularly.

When should the effluent filter be cleaned ?
It is recommended to clean the effluent filter 2 times a year, and up to 4 times if a solid pumping station precedes the septic tank. However, according to the best practices guide, only 1 cleaning per year is required.

Should the septic tank lids be accessible at all times ?
According to the law in Quebec, septic tank lids must remain accessible at all times and must not be obstructed or buried.
